The Japanese government, in partnership with the Honjo International Scholarship Foundation, is giving scholarships to foreign students wishing to enrol in Master's or Doctoral degree programmes beginning in the academic year 2023-2024.
This grant is available to international students pursuing a doctorate or master's degree at a Japanese graduate institution. If candidates are admitted to a Japanese graduate school, they can submit applications from overseas.

- The scholarship will be paid out on a monthly basis throughout the duration of the degree. The value of the scholarship is determined by the following factors:
- 210,000 a month for a one-and-two-year degree
- 190,000 per month for a three-year degree
- 160,000 a month for four and a half years of study
- All nationalities and subjects of study are welcome. Candidates may apply directly to the foundation without being pre-selected by the institution.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for a Japanese Government Scholarship for Foreign Students, candidates must complete the following requirements:
- Candidates must be overseas students without Japanese citizenship.
- Candidates who are enrolled in a professional graduate school are ineligible to apply. Students who can present a research proposal, on the other hand, are qualified to apply.
- The period of enrollment till graduation must be greater than 12 months.
- To be eligible, a student applying for a PhD programme must begin the PhD programme before the age of 35. The student who applies for the master's programme must begin the master's programme by the age of 30. (No exception)
- As a future career plan, the student must have a genuine desire to serve in their own nation.
- The student must have a strong awareness of international friendship and kindness, as well as attend foundation-organized events and participate in the network as an alumni member.
- A basic conversation in Japanese is required of the learner. The interviews will be held in Japanese (No exception)
- The student must be enrolled in a graduate school in Japan as of September or October 2023, or be presently applying for an academic course beginning in September or October 2023. Individuals who are already enrolled and those who are not yet enrolled (including persons who are now working with employment at the time of registering for the programme) are both eligible to apply for this scholarship.
