The Commonwealth Secretariat in the UK is excited to announce the Think Trade, Think Green: Commonwealth Youth Essay Award Competition. This competition offers £2,000 to young people who participate, allowing them to voice their ideas on climate action and explore how trade policy can help address climate change.

Commonwealth Youth Essay Award Details:
  1. The Commonwealth Youth Essay Award invites young people across the Commonwealth to explore the connection between trade and climate change and propose how trade policy can be a part of the solution to the climate crisis.
  2. The Commonwealth consists of 56 member countries with a total population of 2.7 billion, where over 60% are aged between 15 and 29. For more than 50 years, the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) has focused on empowering youth, seeing it as essential for economic growth and inclusive development.
  3. In collaboration with the Secretariat's Trade Competitiveness Section, the CYP invites young people to take part in this essay competition to amplify their voices in climate action and policy.

Eligibility Requirements for the Commonwealth Youth Essay Competition 2024:

To enter the Commonwealth Youth Essay Competition, you need to:

  1. Be between 18-29 years old and a citizen of a Commonwealth country.
  2. Your essay should not exceed 2,000 words, including in-text references and footnotes (reference list not included).
  3. Use full referencing in any style for both in-text citations and the reference list.
  4. Submit your entry as a single PDF or Word file, with 1.5 spacing, using Times New Roman font.

Benefits of the Commonwealth Youth Essay Award:

  1. First prize: £1,000
  2. Second and third prizes: £500 each
  3. The top three essays will be published in the Trade Competitiveness Briefing Series and presented at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa in October.

Essay Topic and Submission Guidelines:

Topic: "How can trade and trade policy address an aspect of the climate crisis in your country?"

For your essay, identify a specific problem related to the climate crisis in your country, explain its connection to the climate crisis, and describe how trade or trade policy can help address it.
